8 Reasons Why I Love Reading on a Kindle

Always Have A Book With Me

Having the Kindle app on my phone makes reading on the fly a breeze. Waiting in a long line? No worries, I just pull out my phone and read a few pages. Shopping with my indecisive daughter?  …keep on lookin’ girl, I’m just going to sit here and read!  The best part is that all of my devices are in sync so if I’m reading on my phone app but then switch to my Kindle eReader it will ask me if I want to jump to the furthest page read. Convenient!

    Access To Hundreds Of Books

It doesn’t matter what I’m in the mood for, I have access to all of it on my Kindle. I could never pack all of those books in my purse or suitcase! When going on vacation I love that I don’t have to worry about which books make the cut or whether I’ll have room for a bunch of books (trust me, my shoes and clothes will already push my luggage over the weight limit!). I have hundreds of eBooks to choose from on my Kindle!

    Anonymity Of What I’m Reading

Oftentimes I’m reading a book with a crazy, hot cover (maybe I lick it, maybe I don’t….) and I don’t always want the guy next to me at the license branch privy to what I’m indulging in. Or, you know, titles like “Dirty Bad Wrong” (love you Jade West and your dirty books!). Also, without a traditional book in hand it’s less likely that people will stop to ask “oh heyyyy, what are you reading?” and try to have a conversation with you about said book when you’d rather be reading vs talking.

Read For Free (Or Cheap) With Kindle Ebooks

The amount of free eBooks I acquire (all legally, folks!) is crazy – I love it!  Some new authors, some loved by thousands. A lot of times they’re free for only a short time so keep an eye out on your email notifications and online groups. In addition, you can often find sales on eBooks for $0.99 which is a steal!  Don’t forget about Kindle Unlimited – love my KU subscription that gives me access to thousands of books for less than two fancy Starbucks drinks a month. Downloading eBooks to my Kindle makes reading hundreds of books every year affordable.

    Dictionary Lookup Option

I’m embarrassed to admit how many times I come across a word in a book that makes me question my education. The dictionary option on the Kindle is awesome – just hold your finger down on the word and it pops up with the definition. Ohhh, that’s what that word means. Huh. Learn something new every day!

    Highlights and Notes

Highlighting and making notes in my eBooks is one of my favorite features! Quotes, memorable scenes, notes about how I feel during a specific moment. I can reference them in the eBook itself or, another great feature, they’re all pulled in to GoodReads for me to reference without going back to the book. I especially love this when I’m writing a review for a book and want to pull a quote or remember how I felt while reading.

    Syncs with GoodReads

I use GoodReads to keep track of what I’m reading, my TBR list, reviews, and more. The Kindle app syncs with GoodReads so whenever I start a new book it gives me the option to mark as “Currently Reading” on GoodReads. As mentioned above, it also pulls in all of my highlights and notes to GoodReads which is perfect for referencing.

    WhisperSync

WhisperSync is an awesome feature that allows you to seamlessly switch back and forth between a Kindle eBook and the Audible audiobook version. I love to read but sometimes I’m doing tasks that require me to listen instead – like cooking, cleaning, or driving – so being able to switch to the audio version allows me to easily continue on with the story until I can pick up the eBook version again. For WhisperSync enabled books, once you buy the Kindle version add the audio companion and you can easily switch back and forth between the two.

Six Tips to Read Kindle eBooks for Free

6 ways to read ebooks for free

I love my Kindle and the Kindle Reading App for so many reasons but one of the awesome perks is the amount of reading I can do for free! A couple of tips before jumping in:

    1. Create a separate email account for your books — this will help keep your general email inbox clear.
    2. Double check the price before downloading an eBook from Amazon as prices fluctuate often.
    3. Set your default device on Amazon to the Kindle Cloud Reader to keep your device uncluttered. Then download specific titles on your reading device as you’re ready to read them.

I’ve accumulated hundreds of free eBooks, some are by new authors and plenty are by best selling authors.  Here’s how:

Sites That Email Free eBooks Daily

While you can certainly search Amazon yourself for free Kindle eBooks, I prefer to sign up for daily emails via sites that specialize in advertising free and discounted eBooks. You can pick out your favorite genres and they’ll send you an email with deals straight to your inbox daily. Typically the emails will have 5-8 books highlighted, book cover image, blurb, price, and button to purchase.

A few sites to check out:  BookBub, eBookDaily, and FreeBooksy.

    Library Card Perks

If you have a local library card be sure to check out their Digital Library options. Many libraries have agreements that allow you to borrow eBooks, audiobooks, and more from 3rd party platforms.

My library card offers access to Hoopla Digital which allows you to borrow titles for free.  My library offers 7 titles per month but I’ve read that every library is different…some less, some more. Although they have eBooks, this is my favorite site to borrow audiobooks from (perfect for listening to while folding laundry, cooking dinner, or driving in the car).

    Booklending.com

Many Kindle eBooks allow you to lend them one time. The lending period is 14 days and you don’t have access to the book until it’s returned.  Booklending.com is a platform that connects borrowers and lenders of Kindle eBooks. Create a profile, input any books you have that are lendable, and request to borrow the books you’re interested in.

There can be a long wait for popular books and books that aren’t as popular may not have anyone lending them but it’s worth a shot. Plus, it’s a nice surprise when you open your inbox to an email that says someone has loaned you a book from your requests. Make sure you keep your borrow requests up to date so that you don’t receive a loan on a book you no longer need or want.

    Author’s Newsletters

There are so many great free eBooks to be had in Author’s Newsletters! Use that book email account to sign up with all of your favorite authors. You can usually find an email sign up form on their website.  It’s a great way to stay up to date on what is happening with them and their writing.

Some authors have partnerships with other authors where they gift a free eBook of theirs (I’ve got some great best sellers this way!). They most definitely email you when their own eBooks have been marked down to free on Amazon. And I also subscribe to authors who send out a list of free eBooks they recommend.

    Giveaways

Although giveaways aren’t a guaranteed way to read for free, it’s still a great opportunity that you shouldn’t pass up. I’ve won many eBooks as well as signed paperback books, Amazon gift cards, and even a Kindle Fire simply by entering giveaways.

My favorite places to find giveaways are on author and book blogger Facebook pages/Facebook groups, Instagram accounts, and GoodReads. Usually it’s as easy as liking/commenting/sharing a post on the social media platforms. Search Facebook for your favorite authors or genre to start finding groups and pages to follow. Usually once you’re in a couple you can easily find more as they’re linked up.

    Advance Reader Copies (ARCs)

This one may be hit or miss for you. As a book blogger/reviewer I have access to ARCs via authors and PR companies where they supply an advanced copy of a book in exchange for an honest review. However, even as readers, there are many authors who will offer ARCs. If you follow or enjoy an up and coming Indie author, reach out to them to let them know how much you enjoy their work and ask if they have any of their books to offer in exchange for a review. They may happily do so as Amazon and GoodReads reviews are important to them as is word of mouth referrals.

ARC eBooks also tend to be a popular giveaway prize as mentioned above so be sure to enter for those as well!

  • 3 Reasons Why I Love Kindle Unlimited (KU)

3 Reasons Why I Love Kindle Unlimited (KU)

3 Reasons Why I love Kindle Unlimited (KU)
First, a quick rundown on what Kindle Unlimited (KU) is. Kindle Unlimited is a monthly subscription through Amazon that gives you access to over one million titles in the Kindle store. This includes books, audiobooks, and magazines. You can borrow up to 10 Kindle Unlimited titles at a time and there are no dates so you can keep them as long as you want. The best part? They offer a free 30 day trial so if you haven’t tried it yet, sign up here.

Now on to the main event – why do I love Kindle Unlimited?

    Read Unlimited Books For Cheap

Seriously, you can’t beat the price! For less than the cost of 1 paperback you can read unlimited books that are available on Kindle Unlimited.  At the time of this post the monthly subscription is $9.99 per month. Although eBook prices vary, a typical eBook can run around $3.99.  If you read more than two books a month then KU is worth it!

Find New To You Authors, Risk Free

If you’re reading a book by a new author it can be risky knowing whether you’ll like their writing style and books. Reviews can be super helpful for this but we all have our own style, tropes, and storylines that we prefer. Kindle Unlimited allows you to check out new to you authors and if you want to DNF (did not finish) a book you don’t feel guilty about hitting return and moving on.

    Binge On Favorite Authors

On the flip side, there’s nothing better than finding a favorite author on Kindle Unlimited and binge reading every book they have available on there. After reading your favorite KU books you can opt to purchase the Kindle eBook to keep forever or purchase the books in paperback version. I like to have eBooks in addition to paperback so I can read in the dark as well as always have books with me when I’m on the go.

Some of my favorite authors that have books available on Kindle Unlimited (available at the time of this post):

    LJ Shen
    Adriana Locke
    Rachel Van Dyken
    TL Swan
    Alessandra Torre
    Jade West
